Darfur Women decry their weak political representation

The Darfur Women Civil and Political Bloc Initiative decried the weakness of their participation in sovereign positions and decision-making across the country which they indicated did not exceed 10%. The constitutional decree had stated that the representation of women in government should not be less than 40%.

The initiative pointed out that many of the rights of Sudanese women were still not being met. Attributing the cause to the paternal nature of Sudanese society and its lack of awareness of women’s rights. Nadia Bilal, head of the initiative, explained that they are working in the field of political and economic empowerment of women, targeting displaced women and in civil society organizations, women tea-sellers, housewives, women of political parties and nomadic women with the aim of empowering them economically and politically through a number of of projects.
