Police arrest over 15 students at Kassala University
Local police in new Halfa arrested more than 15 students from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Kassala on Tuesday during a peaceful march from the dormitory to the premises of the Student Support Fund to protest the deteriorating environmental and health conditions in the hostel.
Eye witnesses in New Halfa confirmed to Radio Dabango the clashes between the police and students, resulting in minor injuries of a number of students and police personnel who were taken to hospital. According to the witnesses, the march ended in violence that broke out inside the premises of the Fund, causing damage to some furniture of offices and partial burning of the headquarters.
In the same context, the sit-in of the students of the Faculty of Medical Laboratories at the University of Gedarif entered its second week, staged to protest the lack of buildings, laboratories and teaching staff. Students told Radio Dabanga that the college is still hosted in the buildings and halls of the Faculty of Medicine, although it was founded in 2016, indicating the lack of equipment and laboratories, and expressed their surprise at the replacement of the premises of the laboratories with the building of the Kalazar Research Unit and the removal of the signboard of the colleague.
Article 40 (1) of the Interim Constitution of the Sudan 2005 provides: “ the right to peaceful assembly shall be guaranteed; every person shall have the right to freedom of association with others, including the right to form or join political parties, associations and trade or professional unions for the protection of his/her interests”.
