Chairman of Elections Commission Resigns
The Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mr. Mukhtar Al Assam, announced his resignation officially from the presidency of the Commission, stressing that the mandate of the current Commission ends on 28 June 2020. He pointed out that this step was taken based on his desire and is in response to the prerequisites of the national dialogue that requires the formation of a new elections commission for the 2020 elections. In his interview with Al Mighar newspaper, Mr. Al Assam expressed his full satisfaction with what has been achieved by the Commission over the past period, and explained that the law does not specify any way to end the six-year mandate of the Commission, which ends on 28 June, 2020 except by resignation.
Al Assam was appointed head of the National Elections Commission by a constitutional decree on 6 July 2014.
During his presidency of the Elections Commission, Al Assam was criticized by the press and opposition parties and questioned his integrity to run the electoral process in Sudan. The attack was caused by his role in managing the electoral process since he was a member of the Commission, a chairman of the electoral roll and electoral constituencies, and then as head of the National Elections Commission.
