Journalists stage vigil to press for release of detained colleague
Journalists of Al Sudani newspaper organized a vigil inside the premises of the Association of Journalists to express their solidarity with their colleague, Mr. Mohamed Babikir, a designer, who is in detention since two weeks.
The journalists delivered a petition to the president of the Association of Journalists, Mr. Al Sadiq Al Rizeigi, demanding the release of their colleague Mohamed Babikir in detention since two weeks without any charge. Their colleague Mohamed is also the Secretary General of Agmar Al Dawahi – a charity organization whose members include fans of late singer Mahmoud Abdul Aziz. According to Bajnews website, Mr. Mohamed is doing designing work for a number of newspapers such as Al Sudani, Al Akhbar and Goun, and the petition demanded the immediate intervention of the Association of Journalists so that he is released or face fair trial, especially that there is no evidence of his involvement in any unlawful activities. The petition enumerated the designer’s years of contributions towards charity activities.
Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
