Man arrested for posting video Satirising Sudanese President Al Bashir
On the evening of 10 July 2018 , authorities detained Mr. Ahmed Al Dai Bishara for posting a video clip criticizing Sudanese President Omer Al Bashir’s visit to Moscow aboard special plane to attend 2018 World Cup final at a time when Sudan was suffering from severe economic deterioration. According the video released on social media and published by Sudan Al Youm website on 17 July 2018, Mr. Al Dai also conducted interviews with citizens standing on queues to buy bread who had denounced the President’s visit under what they characterized as serious economic deterioration. In the video, Mr. Al Dai called on the security authorities to observe the situation themselves and shouted anti-regime slogans.
Detaining a person for reason of holding personal opinions and imparting them through any media is in violation of Article (19) on freedom to hold opinion, seek, receive and impart them and also violates Article (19) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights concerning freedom to seek and impart information by any media. It is to be noted that Sudan ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights during the era of third democratic rule in Sudan.
