Newscaster barred from appearing on TV

Omdurman Satellite Channel suspended Mr. Al Wathiq Jar Al-aleem from appearing in the TV Channel. Sudan Alyom website on Saturday 16 December attributed the suspension to Al Wathiq’s recent comment on the burning down of Omdurman city market, an incident that provoked wide popular criticism against the government especially its ineffective safety measures needed to be in place to deal with such fire incidents.

Before suspension, Mr. Al Wathiq used to present a programme on Omdurman TV Channel entitled “people and life”, a live interaction with the public in which he receives telephone calls discussing social problems and concerns relating to general living conditions. Mr. Al Wathiq also worked as newsreader in an FM Radio.

Earlier, the Omdurman Satellite Channel suspended Mr. Al Zafir Abdul Bagi because of reporting on the outcome of a meeting of the ruling National Congress Party that focused on reelection of President Omer Al Bashir in 2020 elections.

Article 39 (1) of Sudan’s Interim Constitution provides for “an unrestricted right to the freedom of expression, reception and dissemination of information, publication, and access to the press”.
