Relatives demand release of leading politician and journalist
Families of detained politician and Communist Party leading figure Siddiq Yousuf, 88, and Editor-in-Chief of Al Tayyar newspaper Osman Mirghani have expressed grave concern over the health condition of the two detainees and denounced their detention describing it as legally unfounded. The two families added that they do not know the locations of the two detainees and they have also not been allowed to deliver their medications, according to Sudan Tribune website.
On 27 December, security authorities detained the Communist Party leader along with a number of opposition figures and transported them to an undisclosed location. Following the declaration of the state of emergency on 22 February, the chief editor of Al Tayyar newspaper, Osman Mirghani, was detained after a statement he made to a TV channel in which he strongly criticized the state of emergency.
On the other hand, the Sudanese Journalists Union called for the immediate release of Osman Mirghani in detention since 22 February last. According to Sudan Tribune website, the Union deplored and denounced the detention, saying its efforts and contacts would continue at various levels to ensure his release as quick as possible.
The detentions were carried out as part of an organized campaign by the security authorities to confront the almost daily demonstrations led by the opposition and the Sudanese Professionals Association since mid-December 1018.
