Republican Party says Saudi-based member missing

An anonymous group of the National Republican Party (NDP) announced the disappearance of party member Mohammed Salem on Saturday, June 23, 2018, under mysterious circumstances in Saudi Arabia. According to Alrakoba, the leaders of the party believe that the disappearance of Mohammed Salem was ordered by the Sudanese authorities. Al-Rakoub noted similar incidents in the arrest of activists and politicians opposed to the regime, such as the arrest and deportation of Mohamed Ahmed Wad Gulba and the founder of Alrakoba website Mr. Waleed Al Hussein. According to the electronic newspaper, arrests of Sudanese activists in Saudi Arabia comes within the framework of military and security cooperation between the two countries and because of detainees’ solidarity with the opposition in Sudan.

According to international charters, the right to association is legitimate as Article (21) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights provides: “The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized. No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order, the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others”. The Sudanese constitution 2005 in Article 40 (1) also guarantees the right to assembly and association”
