Sudan Consortium seeks to involve citizens in political, constitutional organizations

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sudan’s Consortium, Dr. Abdul Aal Gargash, has announced intent to conduct continued civil and election awareness campaign before, during and after the upcoming round of elections. He said they would contribute towards building the capacity of the democratically-elected political actors to enable them to live up to their responsibilities towards the citizens through better governance.

Dr. Gargash, in a press conference organized by Al Jareed newspapers on Saturday to announce the establishment of a “Sudanese Consortium for Civil Awareness and Good Governance” said the Consortium seeks to achieve goals and aims to maximize results toward that end, adding that the Consortium stands ready to cooperate with all stakeholders. He called on the government and political actors to create an enabling environment to facilitate the free participation of all without exclusion in framing the constitution and taking part in democratic elections.

In the same vein, the Secretary General of the Consortium, Ms. Omaima Al Mardi, said the Consortium seeks to encourage effective involvement of all citizens in the political and constitutional organizations including women, youth, people with disabilities and other important groups. She said civil society organizations and media would be assisted to promote understanding of the people of the election process in order to participate as voters or candidates in the electoral and political processes.

The civil society organizations established the consortium in accordance with the right to peaceful assembly guaranteed by Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which states: “The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized."
