UN High Commission for Human Rights Press Release on Sudan Peace Deal

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, issued a statement on the signing of a peace deal between the Transitional Government of Sudan and the majority of the country’s armed groups and welcomed it “as a major step in ending the suffering and human rights violations and abuses inflicted on the Sudanese people over the past decades.”

Amongst several things related to the Human Rights situation in the country the statement urged the Sudanese government “to ensure a consultative approach to reforming the National Human Rights Commission with a broad mandate to protect and promote human rights”.

Senior leaders/members of the Sudan Human Rights Commission had been relieved of their duties and the Commission’s headquarters put under guard following a decision by the “Salvation Regime Dismantlement Committee” in late August.
